December Fish Camp in New Orleans

I’ve just returned from an absolutely fantastic culinary adventure down in New Orleans, and my heart (and my stomach!) are still singing with the vibrant energy of that incredible city. I had the distinct pleasure of cooking for a private fish camp there, and what an experience it was!

The historic home we were based in was simply breathtaking. You know how much I appreciate beautiful spaces, and this place was a dream. The architecture, the old-world charm, the lush courtyards – it truly transported you. And the kitchen! Oh, my word, the kitchen was an absolute joy to work in. Spacious, well-equipped, and with that lovely, lived-in feel that only historic homes possess. It made preparing all those delicious meals for our hungry anglers an absolute breeze and a true pleasure.

After a week of delightful cooking and contented clients, the fish camp wrapped up, leaving me with several glorious days to explore New Orleans at my leisure. And explore I did! I dove headfirst into the city’s renowned culinary scene. There was, of course, copious amounts of rich, flavourful gumbo – each bowl a comforting hug of spice and tradition. And the beignets from Café Du Monde? Utterly irresistible, served hot and dusted with enough powdered sugar to make you smile.

But New Orleans is so much more than just its food. The air itself vibrates with live jazz music, spilling out from every doorway in the French Quarter. I spent hours simply wandering, letting the soulful sounds wash over me, discovering talented musicians on every corner. And the street art! Every alleyway and building seemed to tell a story, bursting with colour and creativity. It’s a feast for all the senses, a city that truly knows how to live.

It was a truly enriching experience, combining my passion for cooking with my love for travel and culture. From the elegant kitchen of that historic home to the bustling streets alive with music and art, New Orleans truly captured my heart. I came home feeling inspired, invigorated, and already dreaming of my next visit. What a town!
